As Yelling Mule's Web Designer, I had the opportunity to reimagine the shopping experience for an ecommerce site O'verlays. I lead the creation of personas, user epics, information architecture, and clickable prototype for this project. O'verlays is a home decor company that sells panels for easy DIY renovations and upcycling projects for furniture.
With limited time for formal user research, I focused my attention on researching the DIY home space in general and the mentality of the individuals therein. This research brought me to a lot of lifestyle blogs, DIY/ home improvement blogs, and pinterest boards. From there I created I created our main persona: Rebecca. She is a 25 year old Account Manager at a small advertising agency. She has just rented her first apartment in Boston and because she is paying off student loans, she cannot afford super expensive furniture. However, she wants to make her home look as nice as it possibly can.
In this project I wanted to focus on ease of finding items and inspiration. The DIY home decor space is one that prizes visuals for inspiraiton so it was vital that pictures be at the front and center of the searching function. Because of this, I decided to put pictures within the megamenu for shopping, helping to communicate what the panels actually looked like on a finished piece of furniture.
To help with the ease of finding things given different user starting points, I split the menu into 3 main sections: 1) finding by the panel type (search by panel); 2) finding by it's intended surface (search by surface); 3) finding by the furniture it was intended for (kits).
