As a Web Design student at Startup Institute, I had the pleasure of working with one of Startup Institute’s partner companies, Visitdays. My team and I were tasked to research, brainstorm, and prototype a new product or product feature. The project lasted a total of 6 weeks, though I have continued to refine the prototype in my spare time. We were responsible for the entirety of the project - from the design of the research to the creation of the prototype. Vistidays helps higher education institions engage with prospective students and gain actionable data for the students visiting their campus. Our challenge was to create a new product that further connected prospective students to the institution and its current students.
We began by interviewing & surveying current undergraduate students and admissions counselors. From our research we found that the majority of undergraduate students would be willing to meet with prospective students especially if food or monetary rewards would be provided. We also found that most admissions counselors do not have the bandwidth to set up individual meetings between current and prospective students.
We decided the best way to foster connection would be to eliminate the bottleneck in the process by directly connecting university students with applicants. Doing this would fill the desire of current students to meet applicants and would eliminate the need for admissions counselors to organize the meeting. We decided upon a mobile application because we wanted to encourage students to use the application repeatedly. Current students mark when they are available to meet and prospective students then can request to meet with those students during that time.
Because the ultimate goal of the app is to have students meet with prospective students, we decided to make the home screen a feed of requests. Students can view the profiles of those interested in meeting and respond to their request upon entering the app. After meeting with the prospective student, current students can then easily redeem awards for meal points.
